Greetings!

Welcome to the Stone Mill Of Trowbridge Blog!

Originally the site of 'Castle Mill', a corn mill, this mill was extensively developed from circa 1790. At that time advances in gearing and the use of water power meant that clothiers intending to operate on any scale looked for sites where former fulling or corn mills could be converter for large scale cloth manufacture.

The original 'Castle Mill' was rebuilt, the building of this period being the lower part of what then became known as 'Stone Mill'

In 1814, a large area of land adjoining the river was sold for building, and in addition to the arrival of many new factories, in 1817 the Stone Mill was enlarged and a steam engine was added. In 1906 it was sold to Samuel Salter and Co. and finally ceased operation in 1982.

After this it was extensively redeveloped in conjunction with the Shires Shopping Centre (1991), and operated as an 'indoor market' with many small independent retailers.
In 2011 it was purchased from the liquidators by Giles UK Ltd. in a state of poor repair and partial occupancy. The former 'White Lion' public house and 'Destination' night club will be replaced with a martial arts gymnasium and private fitness studio, and the remaining units are attracting strong interest.

Got my trusty camera out and snapped some updated photos last week. Unbelievable how they compare to the photos from 1985
